Pennine Trophy 2017

The Pennine Trophy is an annual backgammon tournament commencing with the first Bradford tournament in January and ending with the Manchester tournament in December.
There will be 3 seperate leagues, Bradford, Manchester and a combination of the two

Following the success of the 2015 and 2016 events, the competition will continue in 2017 with some minor changes to reward both good play and attendance.

Change #1 - All monthly tournaments will start at 12pm prompt (Last registrations taken at 11.55am)

Change #2 - 30% of the registration fees* will be given as prizes to the top 6 qualifying players in the Bradford and Manchester leagues.

Change #3 - £100 will be paid to 3 lucky dip winners at the 4 added money bonus events.

Change #4 - The balance of the registration fees* (approx. £1355.00 based on 2016 entries) will be given as added prize money at the 4 bonus tournaments throughout the year.

Change #5 - No rollovers. Added money paid to highest eligible finishers

Change #6 - Tiebreak rules

As the money used to fund this competition is coming from registration fees (i.e. the more events you attend the more you contribute) there will be an eligibility criteria.

Previously the registration fees were retained by the tournament directors.

Monthly tournaments 

Format

There will be 24 rounds, 12 at each venue. Each round will feature an 11pt KO format.
Points will be awarded as follows:
Main event match win = 1pt - Consolation event winner = 1pt
The player with the most points in each league will be the winner.

Tie Breakers

1. Player with least number of consolation wins
2. Best win percentage
3. Most events won
4. Most matches won
5. Most attendances

Entry fees and prizes

£5 registration (100% return less any promotional costs will go towards trophies and cash prizes for annual competitions)
£10 entry fee. Winner 75% Runner up 25%. (100% return, no rake)

Optional £10 side pools. Winner takes all unless involved players agree a split. (100% return, no rake)

Based on the 2016 average of just over 21 players per tournament, registration fees collected would be £2565. If £240 were needed for promotional costs, admin and trophies, and £400 for the lucky dip this would leave £1925 for cash prizes to be awarded as follows:

30% (£580) for the Pennine competition to be split between the top 6 players of the Bradford and Manchester leagues as follows:

1st = £80, 2nd = £60, 3rd = £50, 4th = £40, 5th = £35, 6th = £25.

Trophies for top 3 in Pennine league and winners of Bradford and Manchester leagues.

To qualify for the annual prize monies and trophies players must attend a minimum of 12 events throughout the year.

*** Lucky Dip ***

£100 will be paid to 3 lucky dip winners at the 4 added money bonus events. At each monthly tournament players will be given a free entry for attending and an additional entry for taking part in any optional events (consolation/last chance). At the 4 added money events a draw will be made for 3 cash prizes, £50, £30 and £20. The more entries held the more chance of winning. The player does not have to be at the bonus event to win. To qualify to win the lucky dip money, entrants must have attended either 3 of the previous 6 Pennine trophy tournaments or 3 of the previous 6 tournaments held at the relevant venue.

Rules

The added money "bonus" tournaments are open to all players but will be limited to a maximum 32 entries. Preference will be given to players with the highest number of attendances from the previous 6 Pennine trophy events.

Registration will be open 1 month prior to the event and following the above preference criteria, places will be on a first come, first served basis.

To qualify to win the added money, entrants must have attended either 3 of the previous 6 Pennine trophy tournaments or 3 of the previous 6 tournaments held at the relevant venue.

If the winner or runner up is a non-eligible player the money will be awarded to the highest qualified finishers.
