Mochy/Phil Simborg Challenge

The Details:

29 UK players are taking part in an event to find two opponents to play Mochy and Phil in two 15 point heads up matches. The winner of the event will play Mochy for a prize of £2400 and the runner up will play Phil for a prize of £800 with both pots being split 75/25.

The heads up matches will take place on Friday 23rd March 2018 at Napoleons Casino, Bradford commencing at 1pm and will be streamed live.

The Format:

The 29 players will play a straight 15-point KO with rounds having a geographical seeding.

The matches will preferably be played live but can be any time and place that is convenient to both players as long as they are played before the deadlines which are:
Round One - 10th September 2017
Round Two - 12th November 2017
Round Three - 31st December 2017
Semi Finals - 18th February 2018
Final - 16th March 2018

Should it not be possible to play a match live before the deadlines and, if both players are agreeable, then you can play online, however you must inform myself or Tim prior to playing. Any online matches will not be rated for UKBGF purposes.

In the event a match is not completed prior to the deadline the Tournament Director's shall take into account scheduling efforts of the players concerned, so it is important that you copy both myself and Tim in any communications and then, at their discretion, will make a decision.


The winner of the event will receive £1200, a P-40 board (image below) and will play Mochy for a further prize of £2400, split £1800/£600.

The runner up of the event will receive £800 and will play Phil  for a further prize of £800, split £600/£200.

3rd and 4th placed finishers will each receive £400

Masayuki Mochizuki (Mochy)

Phil Simborg

Masayuki “Mochy” Mochizuki, born in Tokyo in 1979, has played on the international circuit since 2001.

He is currently ranked the No. 1 Giant in the world, a World Champion, and winner of far too many tournaments to name.

A resident of Tokyo, Mochy’s Under 25 club and Backgammon University has made great players of many young Japanese players, and through the Backgammon Learning Center Mochy will expand his teachings to people around the globe.

In 2005, he was voted onto the 32 Giants List and has remained in the list ever since, reaching #1 (his current level) on three occasions in 2009, 2013 and 2015.



Phil is the world’s first “Professor of Backgammon” teaching backgammon in an accredited college course he helped establish and teach.

Phil has been teaching over 20 years, has published over 200 articles, lectures at many US tournaments, and leads seminars to groups all over the world via the internet. No one in the history of the game has given more private lessons than Phil, and many of his students have won major tournaments around the world.

He is a full-time backgammon playing and teaching professional and volunteers much of his time to bringing new, young players into the game.

In 2015 Phil finished the American Backgammon Tour as No. 5.
